A white Christmas in Texas...who would have thought.

Other than that, I have a busy month coming up. I'm moving the rest of my stuff in about a week. I have to go to St. Louis in two weeks. I have multiple meetings throughout the month...the good thing? I hope with so much activity, I'll get a real offer from someone, and have a real job again soon.

I feel slightly ridiculous [23 Dec 2009|10:11am]

So I go to leave for work this morning, and there's a note taped to the inside of the front door to be careful on the front path as it's icy. Okay, fine, it's below zero. I step outside and S2 is standing on the sidewalk and he says that the gravel is icy too. Which kind of makes me blink - gravel is usually good for grip even when it's cold - but indeed, it's very slippery. So I make my way on the gravel and hang on to the gatepost to get over the bit of pathway onto the sidewalk, and we're both hanging on to the garden wall and moving slowly. It takes about ten minutes to get from the front door to the end of our garden wall, and then we had to let go because most people's garden walls actually have gardens so the rest up the street have overhanging trees and such (the garden areas are gravelled in our house obviously because it's a rental and that way there's no grounds maintenance). I take a few more steps along the sidewalk and start sliding towards the parked cars. There's a car spinning its wheels on the street unable to get any traction. S2 and I look at each other at this point and say, fuck this, let's go back in the house! A1 meets us at the door - he didn't get out of the street in his car, so he came back in, too.

So here I am. I expect I will get teased mercilessly tomorrow, considering all the, "You must feel right at home with the snow," commentary I've been getting :P, but damn. I'm not risking breaking my neck. The part people keep forgetting is that yes, I'm completely used to the weather - but I'm also used to municipalities that have the equipment and manpower to deal with it. The kind of icy sidewalks I just tried to walk on wouldn't exist because the entire area would have been salted hours ago. I might've slid on the front path still if we hadn't done it properly but I would've just crunched my way along the sidwewalk. Ha, and I knew it wasn't level or anything, but did not realise it was quite that slanted towards the street until I found myself in danger of sliding into a car. *shakes head*

The plus side is that I can curl up and watch more Criminal Minds. *beams* I have a season and a half left to go until I'm caught up to current (in a show that just aired its 100th episode at the beginning of December!) and I am well and truly hooked. I am also rather madly in love with Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays Dr Spencer Reid. And with Reid, for that matter. Also Morgan and Garcia, and I covet Garcia's apartment/hair/wardrobe *g*. But Matthew is just one of the most delightfully bizarre and adorable people ever (and he's beautiful too). I have a serious crush. ♥

Uh... Sengoku Basilisk? [19 Dec 2009|04:01pm]

Okay. Last post from me today, I promise.

I mentioned I'd been watching Basilisk recently, and today I went back to get a screencap of this scene from the first episode, where one of the (very minor) characters looks somewhat familiar... )

Sengoku Basara 3 (Manga) [19 Dec 2009|03:32pm]

[ mood | amused ]

So, someone very kindly posted their translation and some preview pictures for the Sengoku Basara 3 manga, and...well, maybe it's just me (and bearing in mind I haven't seen the full scans because I can't find them anywhere right now) but. It's about as gloriously homo as the anime series. Remember those scenes where one character was reflected in another's eyes (Kasuga and Kenshin, then also Masamune and Kojuro)? Well, it's in the manga, too. Only with Yukimura gazing adoringly at Shingen (yeah, what a surprise) and then (and this is the best bit) Kenshin calling Masamune GORGEOUS and talking of his longing to fight with Masamune and thinking that Masamune feels the same, but mentioning something else already reflecting in his eyes WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY KOJURO BECAUSE OF THEIR LOVE, DON'T TELL ME I'M WRONG, OKAY?

Although. It's probably more likely to be Masamune and Yukimura lusting after each other because they end up fighting and talking and there's the usual terrible Yukimura dialogue about how fighting with Masamune is a heart-shaking thrill (yeah, he actually said that) and Masamune seems to approve. Then Sasuke and Kojuro turn up to ruin their fun. Jealous?

Anyway. I WANT MORE. The rest of it sounds pretty awesome, too.

As far as the cover goes, I actually think Kenshin and Shingen look much better than Masamune and Yukimura, but in the preview pictures Masamune looks FABULOUS.

Sweet Jesus, I don't care if it's just temporary, I'm already sick of retail again. Seriously, I know I was going to wait a little longer so I knew for sure where my family was going to be moving, but I've already started applying for jobs related to my field in St. Louis, and I'm so flying up there to get the LE hiring process started ASAP. I just can't take this shit anymore when I'm used to three times the money, not to mention respect.

*le sigh*

This Pleases Me [18 Dec 2009|05:55pm]

Mmm, paid account. ICONS ICONS. I have all my icons back. And have begun the unending quest to populate my free slots with shiny new icons. It's so easy to let time pass whilst poking through various icon posts.

I'll talk about Kaiji and Gankutsuou first. )

I would like to watch more series that do emotional death scenes WELL.

I have also been watching Texhnolyze, and...askdajf it's so rare that ANY pairing I ship has any kind of sexual or romantic encounter in canon that I barely know how to react. It was so surprising. I'm used to series just not going there, so it was weird for two characters I'd been shipping since they first met each other to end up involved in that way. It's not exactly what I'd call a relationship unless using the term very loosely, and I doubt they'll end up with a Happily Ever After ending, but as with the series as a whole (and particularly with character interactions) it feels very believable. It's an oustanding series, actually, but one that took me a long time to get into. It does require that you pay a lot more attention that the majority of anime series, but it's worth that initial investment. And what at first seemed slow to me was actually just a series not spoonfeeding the audience. I also have grown to love the fact that it deliberately shies away from excessive dialogue (no clumsy exposition) and mostly maintains a dull colour palette - although bright colours were used to great effect in one episode. So yeah. One that is definitely worth watching and one that is a great reminder that anime as a medium can be used effectively to tell a complex, realistic and serious story.

(NOT THAT I DON'T APPRECIATE THE NON-SERIOUS TOO, OF COURSE.)

(And of course, serious themes and plots can ALSO be explored without realism and need not be serious at all times to do so.)

I'm also watching Basilisk, FMA: Brotherhood (yes, still keeping up with this one and still enjoying it greatly), Trapeze (although I've only watched the first three episodes so far) and Winter Sonata (which I'm watching despite knowing it will probably make me cry).

Writer's Block?? [17 Dec 2009|07:26pm]

mandolin13
I'm really starting to worry I won't be able to finish the story I'm supposed to write for yuletide. While I can't state the fandom/pairing or pretty much anything about it, I've almost scraped the damn thing and started over ten times.

*le sigh*

The problem with yuletide (at least for me), is there is so SOOO much time between fandom suggestions, character lists and then the actual assignments, that by the time the sucker is due I may have been completely turned off by something that has happened in whatever fandom my assignment is in.

Bah.

I need to just sit down tomorrow and pound something out regardless of whether or not I like the pairing/story suggestion at this point. Clearly, next year I am going to make a point of only selecting things that aren't currently airing on top of being really strict on which characters I'm willing to write.

*sighs again*

Other than that, I'm currently working on icons when I should be writing, so if you have something you want, let me know.

Borders is closing. There is exactly one Borders store in Southampton, and it's already rather well denuded, with half-empty shelves and a board with photos of the fixtures because they're selling everything down to the walls. I wandered over there just to browse after work cuz I had to hit the Boots nearby, and discovered a rapidly emptying store.

This is not helping my "fuck Christmas" mood.

Gifts [14 Dec 2009|12:27am]

mandolin13
I'm really starting to get annoyed with constantly telling my family I don't care about what they get me. I've told them if they care that much just to get me a gift certificate, but nnnnnooooo, they HAVE to get me a gift, and it HAS to be something. How about this...donate to the ASPCA. That will make me much happier than some article of clothing I'll most likely never wear.

*posts cuteness*

I am seriously missing baseball right now. And Psych. And White Collar. And a real job. Ugh. I can't wait to hear from the PD I'm in the hiring process for.
